The main components of the charismatic leadership of the ancient commander are analyzed on the material of Brusov’s two poems. The article substantiates the interest of the Russian poet-symbolist to the personality of Alexander the Great and his doings.

The theme of Moscow is the core subject matter. The material was mainly preserved in the form of a manuscript. Our goal is to render Brusov`s attitude towards both history and historical figures.

    Брюсов и Д’аннунцио: к вопросу об истории перевода пьесы «Франческа Да Римини»

    The article analyzes the reasons Valery Brusov translated Gabriele D'Annunzio’s tragedy “Francesca da Rimini”. It should be noted that if the formal reason for it was Vera Komissarzhevskaya’s suggestion to translate it, the main motivation was: Russian creative intelligentsia’s longtime interest in the plot of the tragedy, known by the great poem by Dante, interest in the work of D'Annunzio wich was “trendy” in Europe, the talent and experience of Brusov as a translator.

    The jubilee academic conference «Brusov Readings» was held in Moscow on December 11-13, 2013, to celebrate V.Brusov’s 140th anniversary. The conference was initiated by the Yerevan University of Languages and Social Sciences after V.Brusov together with Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the State Literature Museum’s Department «The Museum of Literature of Silver Age» (V.Ya.Brusov’s House). Over 50 participants from 10 countries (Armenia, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Lithuania, the U.S., Japan, Poland, Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary) submitted their reports. The participants were very emotional in their speeches, hence, the reports often turned into academic discussions. The reports of the present participants, as well as of those who participated in correspondence, were included in the almanac «Brusov Readings-2013», which differs from previous publications. The almanac opens with S.Kormilov’s report on the essence of all Yerevan almanacs entitled «Brusov Readings». The observations on V.Brusov’s poetry, a new vision of his novels and dramas should be mentioned among the numerous works concerning V.Brusov’s creative activities. Moreover, his war correspondence (1914-1915) was for the first time introduced in the collection of «Brusov Readings-2013». V.Brusov’s private and creative relations with the «fellow writers» were always of certain interest for the specialists in Brusov’s heritage. His relations with Nina Petrovskaya, Konstantin Balmont, Sergey Auslender, and many others were newly interpreted by the authors of the almanac. The reader will get new information on the issues concerning the poet’s relations with K.Nekrasov’s Publishing House in Yaroslavl and his correspondence with Johanna Matveevna in 1914-1915. V.Brusov’s art of translation was always crucial for the specialists in his creative activities; however, his translations of some verses into English and Armenian were for the first time introduced to scientific audience. The presentation of V.Brusov’s views and attitudes towards the world culture were compared with the perceptions of Osip Mandelshtam, Edgar Poe, and Charles Baudlier – a noteworthy event. Unknown materials were presented by N.Zhilyakova; V.Molodyakov’s paper was devoted to the consideration of V.Brusov’s dedicatory inscriptions on his books. V.Brusov’s correspondence with M.Gershenzon, V.Manuilov, his unpublished prose (T.Shuran) was included in «Publications» section. Hand-written materials created by V.Brusov at the earliest stage of his career, taken from the archive fund of «Brusov Science Center», were first introduced in the almanac. XV anniversary academic conference «Brusov Readings» summarized the fifty years of fundamental academic work and outlined the urgent issues referring to the development of V.Brusov studies in the XXI century.

    В. Брюсов и К. Бальмонт в армянских переводах Оноприоса Анопьяна

    The article analyzes the Armenian translations of “The Morning Star” by V.Brusov and “The Swan” by Balmont done by Onoprios Anopyan. It is concluded that the translation is equal to the original text since the correlation between the subtext and the verbal environment and the semantic information of the poems as well as the communicative equivalence, i.e. the initial communicative value of the text, despite certain differences, are preserved.

    В.Брюсов в творческой и личной биографии Нины Петровской

    The article suggests the consideration of the personality of Valery Brusov as the reflection object of Nina Petrovskaya, critic and author of memoirs, who was his lover for several years. Her articles and reviews are analyzed with a description of his prose, poetry and translations . Main attention is given to the transformation of Brusov’s image in her “Recollections”, which are aimed at revealing the myths about the poet as mechanical and prudent figure of the Silver Age. Also the author of these memoirs recreated the atmosphere of the Silver Age, the epoch, .imaged by a pen of one of the vivid representatives of it.

    We don’t need to blame Brusov and other symbolists for all the deadly sins almost including the October revolution. In fact, the Bolsheviks first destroyed symbolism as an old school, and their attempts in selecting figures of the new culture went far beyond Symbolistic ideas on the creation of life. After all, it is not the fault of the Russian Symbolists that their idea to reshape a new creative personality resulted in the destruction of this very personality in the U.S.S.R.

    Еще раз о Фукс: пародия и подражание в раннем творчестве В.Я. Брюсова

    The importance of both literary novelty and its parody can be witnessed in the strange interplay between two books published in 1895: Aleksandr Emel’ianov-Kokhanski’s Bared Nerves (Obnazhennye nervy) and the third issue of Russian Symbolists (Russkie simvolisty). The potentially ambivalent reading strategy that these works provoke demonstrates the indeterminate quality of Decadence in early russian modernism. Parody will be the key means to introduce and explain a new artistic mode.
