    Брюсовские чтения

    The jubilee academic conference «Brusov Readings» was held in Moscow on December 11-13, 2013, to celebrate V.Brusov’s 140th anniversary. The conference was initiated by the Yerevan University of Languages and Social Sciences after V.Brusov together with Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the State Literature Museum’s Department «The Museum of Literature of Silver Age» (V.Ya.Brusov’s House). Over 50 participants from 10 countries (Armenia, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Lithuania, the U.S., Japan, Poland, Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary) submitted their reports. The participants were very emotional in their speeches, hence, the reports often turned into academic discussions. The reports of the present participants, as well as of those who participated in correspondence, were included in the almanac «Brusov Readings-2013», which differs from previous publications. The almanac opens with S.Kormilov’s report on the essence of all Yerevan almanacs entitled «Brusov Readings». The observations on V.Brusov’s poetry, a new vision of his novels and dramas should be mentioned among the numerous works concerning V.Brusov’s creative activities. Moreover, his war correspondence (1914-1915) was for the first time introduced in the collection of «Brusov Readings-2013». V.Brusov’s private and creative relations with the «fellow writers» were always of certain interest for the specialists in Brusov’s heritage. His relations with Nina Petrovskaya, Konstantin Balmont, Sergey Auslender, and many others were newly interpreted by the authors of the almanac. The reader will get new information on the issues concerning the poet’s relations with K.Nekrasov’s Publishing House in Yaroslavl and his correspondence with Johanna Matveevna in 1914-1915. V.Brusov’s art of translation was always crucial for the specialists in his creative activities; however, his translations of some verses into English and Armenian were for the first time introduced to scientific audience. The presentation of V.Brusov’s views and attitudes towards the world culture were compared with the perceptions of Osip Mandelshtam, Edgar Poe, and Charles Baudlier – a noteworthy event. Unknown materials were presented by N.Zhilyakova; V.Molodyakov’s paper was devoted to the consideration of V.Brusov’s dedicatory inscriptions on his books. V.Brusov’s correspondence with M.Gershenzon, V.Manuilov, his unpublished prose (T.Shuran) was included in «Publications» section. Hand-written materials created by V.Brusov at the earliest stage of his career, taken from the archive fund of «Brusov Science Center», were first introduced in the almanac. XV anniversary academic conference «Brusov Readings» summarized the fifty years of fundamental academic work and outlined the urgent issues referring to the development of V.Brusov studies in the XXI century.

    Мифопоэтическая традиция в поэзии Валерия Брюсова. Мифические героини как олицетворения страсти: Ариадна и Афродита

    This article is devoted to the analysiss of the image of mythical women in the selected poems by Valery Brusov. Based on the examples of Ariadne and Aphrodite we attempt to show that the poet, using mythical female figures, endows them with a new meaning (in his texts this is the essence of personification of passion), subdues them into his poetic perspective. and in this way contradicts the myphopoetic tradition.

    Концепция времени в поэтическом Творчестве Валерия Брюсова

    Special attention is given to the analysis of the notions of “moment” and “eternity” in the poetry of Brusov, conceptualizations of the aspects of the past, the present and the future the notion of time dimentions adopted in culture (an hour, a day, a century), the image of the beginning and ending of the time and the notion of its rhythm. A topic of time is a very productive way of transmission for many ideas peculiar to the works by the author of the “Dreams of Humanity”. Immanent and worded poetics of time in the poetry of Brusov is the indicator of the writer’s worldview evolution.

    Еще раз о Фукс: пародия и подражание в раннем творчестве В.Я. Брюсова

    The importance of both literary novelty and its parody can be witnessed in the strange interplay between two books published in 1895: Aleksandr Emel’ianov-Kokhanski’s Bared Nerves (Obnazhennye nervy) and the third issue of Russian Symbolists (Russkie simvolisty). The potentially ambivalent reading strategy that these works provoke demonstrates the indeterminate quality of Decadence in early russian modernism. Parody will be the key means to introduce and explain a new artistic mode.

    Восприятие мировой литературы в «Снах человечества» В.Я.Брюсова и «Cantos» Э.Паунда

    The article presents a comparative analysis of the world literature perception by Brusov and Pound in the literary cycle of poems “Dreams of humanity” and the poem “Cantos”. The author comes to a conclusion that the book by Brusov reflects the diversity of forms of lyrics, and “Cantos” by Pound appeals to a variety of plots in the world literature.

    Пять стихотворений В.Я.Брюсова в переводе А.Сигала

    This article deals with the translation of V.Brusov’s five poems from the literary cycle “Dance of Death” in the book “The Dreams of the Mankind”, translated into English by Alex Cigale. Judging by the subtitle the author created them according to the motives of the German artist Hans Golbane J.’s paintings “The images of Death”. The translation first appeared in “Danse Macabre International” magazine. Of course, Brusov is a very distinctive poet but these translations fully reflect all the power of the poet’s intention.

    В. Брюсов и К. Бальмонт в армянских переводах Оноприоса Анопьяна

    The article analyzes the Armenian translations of “The Morning Star” by V.Brusov and “The Swan” by Balmont done by Onoprios Anopyan. It is concluded that the translation is equal to the original text since the correlation between the subtext and the verbal environment and the semantic information of the poems as well as the communicative equivalence, i.e. the initial communicative value of the text, despite certain differences, are preserved.

    Аллюзии из истории Руси XVII – XVIII веков в творчестве В.Я.Брюсова

    The main theme of the article is the allusion to the Russian history of the XVII – XVIII centuries in Brusov`s works that aroused interest due to the launch of research on the topic of “The history of Russian lyric”. The theme of Moscow is the core subject matter. The material was mainly preserved in the form of a manuscript. Our goal is to render Brusov`s attitude towards both history and historical figures.

    Подтекст сюжета драматического этюда В.Брюсова «Пифагорейцы»

    The article is devoted to the implications of V.Brusov’s dramatic sketch entitled “The Pythagoreans”. The work is harmonized with the sacral code of the symbolic drama. Via the plot’s subtext Brusov appeals to the mysterial roots of drama’s nature, including the way of initiation, and incorporates the author’s philosophical prism.

    Брюсов и Д’аннунцио: к вопросу об истории перевода пьесы «Франческа Да Римини»

    The article analyzes the reasons Valery Brusov translated Gabriele D'Annunzio’s tragedy “Francesca da Rimini”. It should be noted that if the formal reason for it was Vera Komissarzhevskaya’s suggestion to translate it, the main motivation was: Russian creative intelligentsia’s longtime interest in the plot of the tragedy, known by the great poem by Dante, interest in the work of D'Annunzio wich was “trendy” in Europe, the talent and experience of Brusov as a translator.

    The article concerns the unpublished biographic facts taken from the correspondence of V.Y.Brusov and I.M.Brusova from August 15th 1914 till May 21th 1915, when the poet worked in Warsaw as a reporter of the Moscow newspaper “Russkie Vedomosti” and his wife while living in Moscow helped him in his work.

    The article analyses the section “In the country of silence”, which opens the literary cycle “The Green” of Brusov’s book “Seven Colors of the Rainbow”. The conducted analysis allowed to reveal a thematic commonality among the verses of the section that reflect one of the most tragic episodes of the poet’s life.

    Огненный ангел и последний спутник

    The author of the article compares Brusov’s “The Fiery Angel” to S.Auslender’s “Last Companion”. Using the motives, the situations, the plot the system of how the characters are revealed and even verbal constructions of “The Fiery Angel”, Auslender makes quite a different work. It’s proved that the heroes of Auyslender’s novel had real life prototypes.

    Между В.Брюсовым и Г.Адамовичем: «Трофеи» Эредиа в переводе Д.Олерона (Литературные споры начала хх века)

    The article is devoted to such a little-known figure of Russian symbolism as Dmitrij Oleron-Glushkov (1884-1918) – a revolutionist, a poet and a translator. His interest to the “la poésie du Parnasse” to some extent continues the traditions established by V.Brusov and therefore should be considered in the context of the literary polemics of the Silver Age.

    Тема Германии в русской поэзии начала XX века (В.Я.Брюсов, О.Э.Мандельштам)

    The reception and artistic embodiment of Germany’s topic as in the poetry by V.Brusov and also in the verses by O.Mandelstam 463 is realized in cultural and historical aspects. But if Brusov interprets the topic from the historical aspect first of all, and thereupon in the cultural plan, in Mandelstam’s poetry historical component is secondary, while Germany’s culture both as a power opposing the wars and the destruction and its connection with Russia’s culture are of paramount importance. Courageous perception of life and this world reflected in the philosophy of acmeism, in the conception of poetical creation and the Word, found its embodiment in the topic of Germany in Mandelstam’s poetry and, primarily, in his indicative’poem “To the GermanSpeech”.

    The article considers different cases of Brusov’s response to the work of the French late Romantic Villiers de l’Isle-Adam’s. As the author of the article clarifies, the poet’s interest to the French authoris also due to the originality of his literary reputation. Some intersections between Brusov's story and Villiers de l'Isle-Adam's satire are noted, too.
